On the issue of water being a valuable and ever scarce resource, I’m hoping that the companies who make American washing machines are not like the companies who make American cars. American cars with their unnecessary V6 engines consuming twice as much gas (petrol) as 4 cylinder engines, are finally becoming undesirable by many. I’m hoping the same will become true for American top loading washing machines. These enormous contraptions consume vaste amounts of water compared with the front loading energy efficient models that you see in other countries. I worry …. will this escape attention until it is too late to correct the damage? Already this should be one focus for consumer education.
Mr Obama, what can your government do to educate the American people to be aware of irresponsible consumption? What can you and your government and each one of us do to become more aware that our planet’s precious resources, are exactly that – precious?
In a society where it is so hard to convince people to use energy saving light bulbs (yes, that is true!), clearly the message has not gotten across. Yet, the message is clear. It is up to each of us to change from unconscious, irresponsible consumers to aware, responsible consumers.
It is time to take action, albeit small, to save our planet and our future. It is time for responsible leadership in even the smallest things.
